Product Overview...
When designing supports for the structures in your home, there are many standard ways to support the weight of shelves, counter tops, bar tops, cabinets, beams, and ceilings. While these many different support designs can all be effective in supporting these structures, none of them have the warmth, appeal and added value of the Wood Corbel. Wood Corbels not only make solid weight bearing brackets, but they also have the unique quality of being able to be carved into many beautiful and room enhancing designs.

Corbels have been used throughout the ages and were prevalent throughout Europe and the Mediterranean regions. They were initially stone brackets projecting from the face of walls in support of the overhead weight of cornices and archways. European Craftsman found the stone corbel beautiful, but very time consuming and labor intensive. They eventually switched to hand carved wood corbels witch were easier to work with and offered a much wider variety of looks due to the endless variation in wood species.

Today Architectural Depot brings you that same quality and hand made craftsmanship that has made Wood Corbels so popular with Architects, Contractors, and Homeowners all over the world. These decorative wood brackets are carved from many different wood species including Alder, Cherry, Mahogany, Maple, Pine, Poplar, Red Oak, and Walnut. We also carve them in several classic designs such as Acanthus Leaf, Shell Series, Grape Series, Oak Leaf, Wave, and Traditional. They are designed as both a full support wood bracket and also in decorative pilaster designs. Our Wood Corbels can also be painted to match your homes color themes.

Architectural Depot's Wood Corbels are priced at competitively low rates, especially when you consider all the benefits an increased value brought to your home just by installing decorative Wood Corbels for supporting your household structures.

Frequently Asked Questions...
A corbel is an architectural support that protrudes from a wall, designed to carry superincumbent weight.

The origin of the word “corbel” comes from the Latin “corbellus”, which refers to the raven. This reference is based on the beak of the raven, and the similar tapered form of a specific corbel style.

In Medieval architecture, wood corbels were known as “braggers” and “tassels”. Both simply cut and elaborately carved wood corbels appear in the majority of architectural styles, the most common type of wood used being oak, a species known for it’s strength.

The Classical corbels of the ancient Greeks were often decorated with the leaves of the acanthus plant, laurel, olive, clustered grapes, and the human and animal figures of the Romans. Large corbels supporting balconies in France and Italy are among the most elaborately carved, and exist as prime examples of the Italian Cinquecento architectural style.
