When designing supports for the structures in your home, there are many standard ways to support the weight of shelves, counter tops, bar tops, cabinets, beams, and ceilings. While these many different support designs can all be effective in supporting these structures, none of them have the warmth, appeal and added value of the Wood Corbel. Wood Corbels not only make solid weight bearing brackets, but they also have the unique quality of being able to be carved into many beautiful and room enhancing designs.
Corbels have been used throughout the ages and were prevalent throughout Europe and the Mediterranean regions. They were initially stone brackets projecting from the face of walls in support of the overhead weight of cornices and archways. European Craftsman found the stone corbel beautiful, but very time consuming and labor intensive. They eventually switched to hand carved wood corbels witch were easier to work with and offered a much wider variety of looks due to the endless variation in wood species.
